Germany remains Europe’s most mature market for residential photovoltaics and battery storage. If you are a homeowner or property manager planning an upgrade this year, here are the key points that matter.
1. VAT: photovoltaic modules, inverters and home storage systems installed on or near residential buildings are subject to 0% VAT — the supplier applies it directly at invoice, no refund paperwork needed.
2. Feed-in vs. self-consumption: with the EEG feed-in tariff for new rooftop systems now well below 8 ct/kWh, maximizing self-consumption is the economic priority. A well-sized battery combined with an intelligent EMS can push self-consumption above 60-75%, which is where the real savings are.
3. Dynamic electricity tariffs: since market opening, spot-price tariffs allow households to charge batteries when electricity is cheap (often midday and night) and discharge during peak-price hours. Your energy management system (EMS) must support dynamic tariffs and automated scheduling to benefit.
4. Grid connection and registration: every PV/storage installation must be registered in the Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR) before commissioning. Installers normally handle this, but as the owner you should verify it is done — grid operator confirmation times vary by region.
5. Backup capability: with grid outage insurance increasingly relevant, choose a hybrid inverter + EMS combination that supports seamless backup switching (10 ms class). Not every ‘storage-ready’ package actually delivers whole-home backup.
